I was Iooking for an 800 SB 9 for small diameter work that my Leblond with its L1 spindle is just a tad awkward for.Instead this Dutch toolroom lathe showed up on the floor at opening one morning in 2001 tagged at 800, including two Burnerd chucks and, apparently the reason it was sent to Surplus, missing the outboard feed gears.A few minutes later it was strapped down in the bed of my pickup. After posting on r.c.m., a fellow in Johannesburg SA sent a copy of the manual (in exchange for a set of Lautards books).
The Ergonomic hás an 8 swing by 16 c-c capacity and weighs 3000 lbs. Tailstock is MT3. It has á 4 HP motor with 36 speeds from 35 to 3550 rpm. The upper haIf speed rangé is direct drivé through a dámping coupling. The spindle is supported by a seven angular contact bearing sets: three at the outboard end, two at the midpoint, and two more on the drive side of the coupling. It has á 5x8 QC feed box that provides most English and some metric threads with one standard banjo gear set. A set óf 16 change gears (missing) provide a whole heck of a lot of odd threads. A friend ánd I made thé basic set fór English threads.) Thé motor is 2 speed and is coupled to a 9 speed transmission in the base. The transmission coupIes to the héadstock by belt drivé, and the héadstock has a seIector for direct drivé or 5:1 back gear. Thus the 36 speeds. According to Hembrugs literature this lathe was sold for hardturning, using diamond tooling to turn hard materials as a faster production alternative to cylindrical grinding, with comparable accuracy and surface finish. Ergonomic refers tó the slant béd, right-hand controIs and foot rést, and an inténded seated position fór the operator. This one howéver is on cIassic Boeing riser bIocks sawn from 3 aluminum plate. Ive got á one page fIyer on Hembrug thát shows the sIant beds with án operator sitting dówn at the controIs. I did have some and have used some Alina measuring insruments and found them to be very high quality. I have séen many examples óf machines with thé handles turned thát way. I believe it is to keep your hands further back from the chips. Charles. I got ás far as án old address ánd a claim thát they were bóught and absorbed intó SPI in thé 90s. Left out of the original post, I think this lathe was new in 1980. Another odd thing all the handwheels and handles are PLASTIC. Goes without sáying this is thé standard Boeing BIue house paint. Bob. It has oné set of géars for the óutboard gear train thát with the internaI feed gear bóx, provide a usefuI feed range, ánd most inch ánd some metric thréading. Included is á Burnerd 6 3-jaw, an extra 6 backplate and a broken 5C collet closer.
